Balad'EAU is currently at the HUMPBACK WHALE WORLD CONGRESS, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Since we have access to the world's greatest experts on this species, I wanted to ask them YOUR questions about humpback whales.
Today's question comes from Line, in Québec, Canada who is wondering why humpback whales feed on the tiniest animals like krill, and what is the amount of krill (or which other species) they need to ingest in order to fulfill their food needs?
I found the answer from two eminent scientists, Dr. Joy Reidenberg and Dr. Alexander Werth, experts in whale physiology and feeding. Let's listen to their answer.
Since we here the greatest humpback whale, talking about different things, even I come up with many questions. The one I had today is how can we achieve whale conservation in traditional whaling countries, like Iceland… and fortunately enough, I met Iro Tsarmpopouloufokianou and here is her answer to my question.
We spent an incredible week, with the world’s greatest experts on humpback whales, including one man, who has been studying humpback whales in Dominican Republic since the 80s. Oswaldo Vasquez has always been a great ambassador of his country, and its whales. In fact, he’s a legend. And here he is, sharing a part of his story.
During the last week, humpback whales were highlighted. The congress brought together all stakeholders in humpback whale science, from genetics to acoustics, through behavior, conservation, tourism, and much more. Reaching out to these experts allowed us to create this special series of spodcast, and answer your questions. But the last word goes to marine biologist Peter Stevick, from the College of the Atlantic and most importantly our honorary president, who shared the best overview of everything that was discussed this week, and where to go from there. Here is closing speech.
